How to be a ‘real’ man – drag king workshop (SOLD OUT!)

It’s not a man not is it a woman. The drag king blurs the borders between masculinity and
feminity. Everybody knows drag queens, but Dutch drag kings are relatively new and they are increasingly more popular. Playing with identity and all its potentialities, even if it is just for one day, is fun. And at the same time, it’s serious business.

This workshop offers the opportunity to play and experiment. In collaboration with the King
Betty Collective, who have put the drag king on the Dutch map since 2009, and burlesque
performer Louis de Ville (Paris), you are given the chance to search for their masculine side
of their personality. Subsequently, you will bring out this masculine side by means of make-
up, hair and a outfit to match.

Drag King pioneer Diane Torr is our special guest this evening. She will talk about the documentary and her work. An unique opportunity to get a peek behind the scenes.

In the documentary Man for a Day we follow performer, activist and drag king pioneer Diane Torr during one of her extensive workshops: ‘Man for a Day’. During this workshop a group of women examines the impact of gender appearance on who they are. In the course of a week they search for the man they always wanted to be. Funny and confrontational at the same time, both documentary and key figure Diane Torr show the impact of the drag king movement.
The film premiered at the Berlinale in February this year. This will be it’s Dutch premiere.

How do you name your own body while you’re in a transition or you have ever been through a transition? What words do you use to describe certain – changed or unchanged – body parts, for yourself and for your lover? How do you want your loved ones or partners to name your body?

Transgender activist, educator and performer Kay Garnellen shares his experiences and accompanies you during this workshop. He does this together with Jonathan Todd, who is involved in Transman foundation. A stimulating, safe and relaxing environment where we put an end to narrow-minded thinking.

Transgender, transsexual or genderqueer. You may already be familiar with there terms, or be guessing their actual content. During this movie night these concepts will become tangible. TranScreen Festival selects films which positively address, or at least loosen, the male-female dichotomy. Tonight we watch ‘Fake Orgasm’, a film about performance artist and activist Lazlo Pearlman; about art, sex, performance, fake and real.

Of course, the curators of the festival will explain their choices and answer all of your questions. Furthermore, our special guest, transgender activist Kay Garnellen, will complete the broad perspective.
